Election No Laughing Matter

As I watched the Obama-McCain presidential debate Friday night, I was struck by McCain's Cold War warrior stance and I was reminded of one of the funniest comedy skits I've ever seen called "We Like War" performed by that master of irony George Carlin. Now war is no laughing matter and I do not want in any way to diminish nor denigrate the supreme sacrifice of those brave soldiers who fought for our freedoms. However, as I ponder Barack Obama's reminder to the American people of the collosal misjudgment of the Bush administration that took the U.S. to war in Iraq in the first place, I remember how Stephen Harper advocated strongly back in 2003 for Canada to join the Iraq War Coalition and I realize that this election is no laughing matter.

Good Old Feminine Intuition

When asked why she didn't like Stephen Harper, my sharp as a tack, politically astute, ninety-one year old mother-in-law answered, "I don't know what it is about him, I just don't like him."

Lest We Forget

We shouldn't forget that for the better part of 2003 Stephen Harper advocated vigorously for Canada to participate in the war in Iraq.

"Jean Chrétien has left Canada outside this multilateral coalition of nations," he wrote. "This is a serious mistake."
"Canada remains alienated from its allies, shut out of the reconstruction process to some degree, unable to influence events. There is no upside to the position Canada took."

Had he been prime minister of a majority government at the time, we'd be mired in this fiasco of a war today. Why should we trust him?
